Course of the Mummy: Children get a taste of University life

A mummy-making, treasure-finding activity day for 30 eager primary school children took place at St Catharine’s and St John’s Colleges, Cambridge, yesterday, introducing the young participants to a taste of University life. Schoolchildren from five primary schools in Cambridgeshire and Suffolk were invited to visit the two colleges and take part in a day of hands-on activities spear-headed by the University's Community Affairs team.

The National Education Trust, in association with Brian Moses, is extending the successful and acclaimed Able Writers programme.
Able Writers groups were first established five years ago in different parts of the country - giving teams of talented young writers from a group of schools the opportunity to spend the day with a professional writer, three times a year.

6s and 7s Programme6s & 7s programme
As part of its commitment to raising achievement for all children, the National Education Trust is training support staff in schools across the country, to deliver its 6s & 7s programme.
6s & 7s is a proven, successful, early intervention programme designed to help children in years 1 and 2 to develop confidence, self-esteem and resilience.
Children from 48 schools will benefit by developing good social skills that will enable them to form effective relationships with their peers and adults. Results show improvement in children's mental health and well being and that they become emotionally more available for learning.
For further information about the programme, click to visit the 6s & 7s website, or contact NET's National Programme Manager, Angela Jackson at .

Pegasus Wizard Pegasus Wizard Pegasus Wizard

As part of NET’s extended schools work, we are a partner in the Pegasus Wizard based at Pegasus Primary School, Oxford. The project is organised and funded by the school, NET and The Woodward Charitable Trust.
"It was just magic watching my daughter's face when she got the book in the post, she loved reading the book."

Pegasus WizardThe vision
  • Children have a touch of magic enter their lives
  • The children gain a sense of the intrinsic joy in reading as a means of following their interests
  • They gain a profound sense of the joy of books and reading.
What happens?
  • Twice in every child’s primary school life, the Pegasus Wizard visits
  • The Wizard knows what the child is passionate about and sends them a book – brand new and just for them – on that very subject
  • The book arrives by post to their home and addressed to them personally
  • The Wizard may visit at any time between the ages of 5 and 11, but always at a time when the child has a particular interest.
Motivational events
  • A number of motivational events for children and their families, involving books, writers and storytellers, take place each school year: the Wizard remains a mystery.
