What is a Blink? A Blink is a one-day review, which creates an intensive focus on key aspects of the school or college, negotiated with leaders and managers prior to the visit. The National Education Trust developed the Blink model to act as a fresh approach to review and inspection, drawing on our extensive national and international experience in school improvement working with over 500 schools, colleges and early years settings. The focus of the day can be on anything from raising attainment to curriculum innovation, from gifted and talented pupils to EAL, from sparkling classrooms to middle leadership, from specialisms to outdoor learning. Why Blink? Blinks can focus on issues raised in formal inspection or on aspects identified by your own self-evaluation: it is tailored to individual settings, whatever their current starting point. Blink has been especially welcomed as a whole-school review by newly appointed headteachers, and by those who have been in post for a few years and want a fresh pair of eyes on established practice. A Blink celebrates what is good and great in a setting, identifying sharply how practice might be even better; it offers high quality and engaging feedback to staff; and it values what colleagues are doing and leaves them feeling good about their practice. A Blink is excellent preparation for any external inspection, and part of the Blink is the provision of a NET Toolkit for self-review. How does a Blink work? Blinks are carried out in partnership with the school and are underpinned by a strong professional development theme for headteachers, teachers and support staff. They are led by experienced national and international reviewers and inspectors, including current headteachers and former HMI. Blinks gets to the heart of an early years setting by exploring key trails with staff. A bespoke written report celebrates what is being done well, and offers pointers for ‘next steps’. A strong professional development theme for staff lies at the heart of this model. The National Education Trust’s team of Associates who lead Blinks include experienced national and international reviewers and inspectors, including current headteachers and former HMI.
