At the National Education Trust we are engaged in a debate with governor associations, education professional bodies, politicians and organisations advising government to raise the issue of Strategic Leadership in schools.
The emphasis is on the need for governors to take a more professional approach to their role with mandatory training and ongoing professional development. We believe that there should be more flexibility in the structure and composition of governing bodies to suit prevailing circumstances in individual schools and areas.
We also need to examine how the workload of headteachers can be focused more towards improving standards of teaching and learning, with every school having the structure and funding to provide an effective bursar/business manager function.
I welcome input from colleagues in pursuing the debate.
