Sustaining Success in Primary Schools
The National Education Trust (NET) is an independent foundation dedicated to
improving the quality of education nationwide.
As part of its training and development work, it offers a 4-day programme for
primary heads focusing on sustaining successful school leadership. A working
group of up to 12 headteachers is envisaged, working across a six month period
and linked for that period to one of NET’s tutors. There is some light pre-course
reading.
The programme is led by NET Director Roy Blatchford, together with a
current primary headteacher.
Programme
Day 1
Exploring models of strong leadership, with reference to Kouzes
and Posner’s book ‘Leadership Challenge’
Debating the features of ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ schools
Setting up mini action-research projects back in schools
Day 2
Sharing what our own schools do well, and how we keep the vision
and practice fresh with children, staff, governors and parents
Reflecting on the values of our schools and how we nurture them
Preparing for a visit to a good school in a different part of the
country: the ‘Blink’ model of school review
Day 3
School visits nationally
Day 4
What have we learned from the visits about others’ practice, how
best to sustain our own, and the ‘Blink’ model of school review?
Shaping an action plan for continued success, involving, where possible, a governor and deputy head
